Our basic course consists of six three-hour sessions. You will be taught how to mix porcelain colours to obtain the right consistencies, as well as how to use and take care of your brushes. Flat brushes are mainly used in this style of porcelain painting and “open-medium” used to mix the paint (with this type of medium, after mixing with the porcelain power colours, the paint will stay wet for a day or two). Then you will be shown how to load colour onto the brush so as to give shading in one stroke. You will be practicing straight strokes, angled strokes, c-strokes and comma strokes.

Objectives: To learn when and how to use certain strokes. After practicing with various strokes, your first project will be to paint wild roses – flowers with simple petals. This will take two sessions with two firings in between. Then you will be shown how to deepen and shade so that your painting will have better dimensions and to brighten the flowers and leaves.

Your next project will be to paint round objects, such as apples. In between the wild roses and the apples projects, you will also learn how to blend background colours and the wipe-out technique, i.e. to sketch flowers or leaves onto a wet background and then using a flat brush to create clearly defined flower petals and leaves.

Summary : At the end of the basic course, you will have three completed projects. For those who would like to learn more, classes are available that will teach you to paint more complicated flowers, such as double-petal roses. We also offer intermediate and advanced courses.
